After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.
Judges 3:31
Now when you read this verse you probably have a couple of thoughts….like…
What is an ox goad?
An ox goad was a tool that farmers would use to move cattle where they wanted it to go. It was a large stick that had a pointed end. It was not intended to puncture the cow, jus to annoy it enough to “goad” or motivate it to move. Therefore the goad wasn’t sharp, but dull. Shamgar killed six-hundred men with a large, pointed stick. Wow!
Was Shamgar as hard-core as he sounds?
I have no doubt that Shamgar was a courageous, strong man, but don’t think that Shamgar was “big and bad” enough to pull this off on his own. God used Him to do His will in delivering the children of Israel from the Philistines.
