Week 2 of Judges- Shamgar and the Ox Goad

After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.
Judges 3:31

Now when you read this verse you probably have a couple of thoughts….like…

What is an ox goad?
An ox goad was a tool that farmers would use to move cattle where they wanted it to go.  It was a large stick that had a pointed end.  It was not intended to puncture the cow, jus to annoy it enough to “goad” or motivate it to move.  Therefore the goad wasn’t sharp, but dull.  Shamgar killed six-hundred men with a large, pointed stick.  Wow!

Was Shamgar as hard-core as he sounds?
I have no doubt that Shamgar was a courageous, strong man, but don’t think that Shamgar was “big and bad” enough to pull this off on his own.  God used Him to do His will in delivering the children of Israel from the Philistines.

Life Step: Think about it…
When you are doing what God wants you to do, he will use you to do things that you couldn’t do on your own!

How are you going to be used by God today?
What’s God leading you to do?

  1. Honestly, just because Shamgar was big and strong doesn’t really mean he could do amazing things. But he let God use him to do those things, and that’s where his strength really came from! God can seriously use anyone who wants to serve God, we don’t necessarily have to be big and strong. (good thing, cause I’m weak ;)) just be willing, and God can use us!

  2. God can use us anyway he wants.you don’t have to be strong or weak tall or short.no matter what he can use you like he did with Shamgar.like alexis said, Shamgar’s strength really came from God letting him do that! he can use anybody to serve Him to do things.in any way!

  3. God is leading me to be a better family member to those around me. I sometimes don’t feel like I have the right stuff to accomplish what He desires me to do but He gives it to me as I continue to be faithful to Him. I am no superwife or supermom or anything else but with the Lord leading me I can do what He wants me to do to guide and minister to my family.
