Devotion: Jesus >Me
Hebrews 3:1–6
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
- Jesus and Moses had something in common. They accomplished the calling that God the Father had called them to.
For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after…
Moses is the house. Jesus built the house.
We are the house. God built the house.
What is the house? Well- It’s a picture. A picture of what some have called “the household of faith.” God is building this house- this group of people who believe in and follow Him.
But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. (Hebrews 3:1–6)
The point is just like the builder is greater than the house, Jesus is greater than the household of faith that He is building. Jesus is greater than us!
Application:
–There are some men and women of faith who have been greatly used by God, but they’re not Jesus. There have been lots of Moses’ and still are. There have been great leaders who trusted in God and were used by him. Sometimes we are still tempted to make too big of a deal over people. It may be the “celebrity pastor” or the guy at your work that has had a huge impact on you. We’ve got to keep your eyes on Jesus more than on men.
–You and I exist for Jesus. He does not exist for us. How do you know if you are tending to believe that God exists for you?
– How many of your prayers are requests only?
– Do you pray only when you’re in crisis or need something?
– Do you tend to ask God what He wants in your decisions or do you just ask God to bless the decisions that you are making?
The answer to these questions has too often been wrong in my life. I exist for Him because He is greater than me.
Heavenly Father,
Please help me not make a bigger deal about me, or other men than I do for you. I confess to you this morning that You are greater than anything! I am so thankful for Your Son and the house that you have built and are building. I love you! Amen.
