For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. (12) For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Romans 10:11-12
Explanation:
There are two aspects to these two verses that need to be pointed out.
First, the surety of the promise.
Have you ever relied on someone for something and then they didn’t come through? It’s happened to me before. I’ve “worn egg on my face” because someone didn’t do what they said they would do. It is a diifficult and maddening circumstance to find yourself in a place where someone said they would do something and they didn’t.
Paul is referencing an scriptural theme here when he said, “Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Isaiah 28:16
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
Jeremiah 17:7
The idea is that if God makes a promise he can be trusted. You will never be in a situation where you are counting on Him for something He promised and He doesn’t come through. In the context, the promise is that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Second, let’s talk about the person to whom the promise is made.
In verse 12, the emphasis is that God can be relied, and when God says “whosoever”, He really means whosoever. Jew, Greek, rich, poor, beautiful, ugly…these human distinctions do not matter to God. The Lord God who is Lord over everyone is “rich”, that is He has all of the resources needed, to save anyone and everyone that call on Him for salvation.
Application:
Jesus died for you. He will save whoever sincerely calls to Him for salvation. Today is the day of salvation if you have never repented and called to Him by faith for salvation. There is no person who He will not save. That person does not exist. He is willing to forgive. He is able to forgive. He has all the resources to fulfill the promises that He has made at His disposal. If you will call on Him to save you, you will never be left “holding the bag.”
Response:
1. Call on Him to save you.
2. Tell everyone you can.
