(32) And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. (33) And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? (34) And they said, The Lord hath need of him.

Luke 19:32-34

Explanation:

These 2 disciples obey Jesus’ command to them. They go to the town and everything was exactly as Jesus said it would be. Not only was the detail correct about where the colt would be, the question of the people in asking at the time they took it was precisely what Jesus said would happen. They said what Jesus told them to say and they had no problem performing the task.

Now, Jesus riding on a colt was in fulfillment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9.

(9)  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

We know that what we are about to read was the fulfillment of that prophecy because of what the Gospel of Matthew says in the same accounting.

(4)  All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
(5)  Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Application:

Today’s application is very straightforward and simple. Do not let its simplicity move past you. Certainly Jesus should be obeyed because He is God and is our authority. Jesus should also be obeyed because He can be trusted. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere present, and He has used His authority and power to help us. Even when we do not understand exactly what He is asking us to do, we should trust Him. That trust is fully expressed in obedience to what He says.
