Explanation:

Roman soldiers over the years wore two kinds of footware- Caligae and Calcei.  The Caligae were a sandal. 

The Calcei were more of a closed toed and provided more protection in wet and winter climates.

As shown in these pictures they were often cleated.  This gave them the ability to stand against the enemy.

Here the Apostle Paul says that we should put on these boots with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.  I think it is appropriate that the boots are on the feet, because the Gospel has to be advanced.  The Gospel must be taken somewhere.  Jesus told us in Mark 16:15:

(15)  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

What is the Gospel?

The word is εὐαγγέλιον (yoo-ang-ghel’-ee-on) and literally means “a good message” or “good news”.  It is defined by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15.

(1)  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

(2)  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

(3)  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

(4)  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

(5)  And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

(6)  After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

(7)  After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

(8)  And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

How is this gospel the gospel of peace?

Because we were the enemies of God, and yet God has made peace by the blood of His Son.

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

(10)  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

(11)  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Application:

When we go with the Gospel, sharing it with the lost, we are sharing that peace is possible for the enemies of God.  We cannot keep this good news to ourselves.  We must put on these boots to stand against the schemes of Satan who hates the advancement of the Gospel.  We must take the Gospel to every place that it needs to be proclaimed.
