Lord, I believe! John 9:38

H- Highlight

38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

John 9:38

E- Explain

After the blind man takes the position that Jesus is from God, the pharisees cast him out of the synagogue.

34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

John 9:34

This means that he was excommunicated from that assembly. He is a “sinner”. He’s an unbeliever to them, and is not able to fellowship with that assembly.

Look what Jesus did. This is a great example for us. Do you want to be like Jesus? Do this!

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

John 9:35

Jesus was not blind. He went and looked for him. He found him. He asked him the most important question.

  • The man believed that Jesus was a man who healed him physically.
  • The man believed that Jesus was a prophet who spoke on God’s behalf.
  • The man believed that Jesus was from God because He healed him physically.

Now it was time to take that last step to go from just being healed physically, to being made whole spiritually.

Notice, it is all connected to the identity of Jesus.

36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

John 9:36-37

Notice Jesus’ answer is on theme with the whole chapter.

The one who is the Son of God is the one this blind man has seen and is seeing now!

Here is the last statement the man made on Jesus’ identity.

38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

A- Apply

What a beautiful response! This is the response that it takes to have your sins forgiven. This is the response that it takes to go from spiritually blind to spiritual sight. You must believe.

Jesus isn’t just a man, a prophet, or a miracle worker. He isn’t just someone to make your life a little better. He didn’t come to give you your best life now. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is God. He is equal with the Father. He is the One in whom we should put our faith.

R- Respond

When it comes to sharing the Gospel, we should look for a response. We should encourage people to place their faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and the only hope for their sins being forgiven. Lord, please use me today to do this in someone’s life. Amen.
