Week 11: Day 1- Deuteronomy 18:15

This Weeks Passage; Deuteronomy 18:15-22

15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Deuteronomy 18:15

Explanation:

In today’s text Moses foretells of a prophetic ministry that will happen among the people of Israel. God had used Moses to speak on behalf of himself to the people. In Exodus 20:18-20, right after the people had received the 10 commandments from God through Moses they said:

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

Exodus 20:18-21

Moses had been a prophet, speaking on behalf of God to the people, and a mediator, going to God on behalf of the people.

In many ways, Moses was like Jesus Christ. In fact, many believe that because of the singular use of the word “Prophet” in this verse describes the coming prophetic ministry of Jesus. We know this is an accurate interpretation because of what Peter, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said when he quoted this verse:

20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Acts 3:20-23

As we read the rest of this weeks text in the next few days, we will see that God was foretelling his use of prophets succeeding Moses to help lead his people, but He also was prophesying of the coming Jesus who would reveal God to His people, and would mediate a new covenant to men.

Application:

It’s an amazing hting to think that we can think God’s thoughts after Him as we read scripture. He has revealed God to us in such a practical and incredible way. We can see the revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ who is the living Word, and ever lives to make intercession for us! We can hear from Him through His Word, and we can go to God as He intercedes for us!

Response:

  1. If God has spoken to us through His Word, then He expects us to know what it says, and to obey it! Where do you need to be obedient today?
  2. Is there something between you and God? Today, go to God, knowing that Christ will intercede on your behalf. He is faithful and just to forgive us from our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness

Week 11 Passage: Deuteronomy 18:15-22

15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

17 And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?

22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Week 10: Day 5- Deuteronomy 6:12-13

12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 13 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Deuteronomy 6:12-13

Explanation

As we learned yesterday, God can be trusted. He keeps His Word. God also is a God who blesses. God had certainly blessed the children of Israel. He had brought them out of Egypt and the bondage that was there. He had provided manna, quail, and water to sustain them in the desert. He had protected and provided for them. Now he was going to give them this land that He had promised to them and to their forefathers.

But with blessing comes a temptation. Moses tells them to be aware that blessing can make one forget the source of the blessing. He was concerned that they would begin to think that they were the source of the good things they had rather than God.

Instead of forgetting the Lord, Moses called on them to fear the Lord.

Application

We are so blessed where I live. I have so much. God has blessed me with a rich heritage and access to the Gospel. I have a comfortable home, a great family, a great church, a fulfilling and challenging job, and really don’t lack for any needs, and most of my wants. If I’m not careful, I will forget the Lord.

How? I begin to think that I’m more than I am. I can grow prideful. I can begin to think that God is really blessed to have me. The truth is that the best of us don’t deserve anything good from God. We were His enemies. We were sinners, but because of God’s great love, He sent His Son to die on the cross so that we can be forgiven, and then we can be made into the likeness of His dear Son.

Instead of forgetting God, I need to fear Him, to serve Him, and to swear allegiance to Him.

Week 10: Day 4- Deuteronomy 6:10-11

10 And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

Deuteronomy 6:10-11

Explanation

Moses calls them to obedience to God’s law, then he calls them to pass God’s Word along to their children. In today’s text and tomorrows text he gives another reason that they need to obey and pass God’s Word along. You see, Moses knew that God was a promise keeping God. That means that they were going to go into this land because God had promised this land to Abraham.

18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Genesis 15:18

He also made this promise to Isaac.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

Genesis 26:2-3

He made this promise to Jacob.

13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

Genesis 28:13

It was coming time for God to fulfill his promise, at least in part, to the children of Israel. That meant they were going to go in and militarily take over this land, that God would be with them in the taking of the land, and they would possess all kinds of blessings for which they had not worked.

The implications of this He will address with them in the verses we will study tomorrow.

Application

For today we can be assured that God will do what He says He will do. What God promises God will do. His promises are sure.

6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Psalm 12:6

God can be trusted. Those who know Him and follow Him must live in trusting obedience. Just as the Israelites had to trust God by going into the land in obedience, we must act on our trust in God in our daily lives. The just shall live by faith.
