Galatians Day 7- Fear and Hypocrisy

FEAR4-640x701Have you ever known (or been) someone who was one way with one crowd and then another way in another crowd? None of us like to see that in other people, and we all tend to have a difficult time seeing that in ourselves.
For those of us who know Christ as Savior this hypocrisy can be more than just a social problem. This can be a spiritual problem as well. How do we deal with it in ourselves and in others when we see it?

11    But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.12    For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

Paul was willing to confront the leader of the church in Jerusalem because of what he was doing. Paul was confronting Peter because of Peter’s fear of man. Peter was acting in a way that was consistent with his theology when no jews were around. He would “eat with the gentiles”, which meant he wouldn’t be worried about the Old Testament dietary laws when no jews were around. But when people who believed that you had to believe in Jesus and keep the law to be saved, the judaizers, came around, Peter feared what they would say and think and withdrew himself from the gentiles with whom he had spent time. Instead of confronting the bad theology of the judaizers he feared them and avoided the gentiles.

13    And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

The problem is that Peter, as a leader, was setting an example. I see two big problems that came from Peter’s behavior.

1. The church’s relationship with the gentiles. Can you imagine how the gentiles felt when they began to be avoided by the church leaders? Do you think that it could have created racial, social, and theological tension in their church? We don’t know how far it had gotten before this time, but if left unchecked it could have made a negative impact on the church.
2. The toleration of harmful theology. The behavior of the leaders of the church meant that they were tolerating a theology that said that Jesus’ death and ressurection is not enough for salvation.

So Paul had to say something…

14    But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

The only answer that Peter could give is, “Because I am more concerned about what these judaizer’s think.” Notice that it took a lack of fear of Peter on Paul’s part to confront Peter’s fear of the judaizers that was affecting the church and the gospel.

Now before we get to hard on Peter and the rest of the leaders there, have you and I ever behaved in a way that hindered the gospel?

  • Have we ever been scared to tell someone about Jesus even when we knew we should?
  • Have we ever failed to put time into our schedule to share the gospel with our church family?
  • Have we ever failed to be open to new people in our church by focusing on the comfortable group of friends that we already know?

Think about this- Every person that comes into our life has steps that they need to take toward Jesus. When God puts them in our path it means that we have a stewardship of that opportunity. Often our response is like Peter’s response- fear. Fear will cause us to deny what we know to be true. When we give into the fear and fail to act we say something about the gospel that is not true. This affects both the saved and the unsaved around us.

Don’t give in to fear today in you or in others!

Galatians Day 2- Abandoning the Gospel!

Devotion for January 22, 2014

Warning- very male illustration ahead.

397621743_fc701db610Imagine walking through an incredibly humid jungle in the middle of war torn Vietnam. Your a soldier in a platoon working your way through the underbrush to meet up with another unit in a short period of time. You look behind you to see if your fellow soldier has your back and you realize that he is gone. He left! He abandoned you. Now you are exposed and unprotected. This is a picture of the word “removed” in our text for today.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Paul expresses amazement at how far from the gospel they had gotten and how quickly it happened. They abandoned “him that called you into the grace of Christ”. They left. They abandoned the Lord, Paul and the gospel itself. Where did they go? What distracted them?

Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (Galatians 1:6, 7)

False teaching and false teachers had drawn them away from the gospel that they had received. Notice that Paul says that this was on purpose. There were people who were trying to do this for multiple reasons.

False teachers and false teaching is not a new problem. Unbiblical preaching and teaching are easily found today. We have access to so much teaching on the Bible, and Paul gives us this warning- there are some who will teach the wrong thing for their own personal reasons.

Tomorrow we’ll be looking at how we respond to people who preach “another gospel” to us.

But for today think about this…

You and I have a responsibility to discern what we are being taught by the Truth of God’s Word.

This isn’t just true when someone is preaching or teaching. This is true of the “sermons” that we hear all the time from ourselves, tv, radio, blogs, podcasts, commercials, billboards, friends and family. And this is especially true when the teaching is dealing with the gospel itself.

Where are some of the places you hear these “sermons”?

Devotional Blog- What about when evil people prosper?

Devotion for January 2, 2014

Righteous art thou, O Lord, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously? Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins. But thou, O Lord, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter. How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts arekm consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end. (Jeremiah 12:1–4 KJV)

I have definitely felt this way. I have wondered (mostly in times when I am struggling) why I’m having a hard time while I’m innocent and the guilty are prospering. A few things come to mind in response:
The question assumes that I’m entirely innocent. Which of course I am not.
The question assumes that God is not doing anything, or has done everything he is going to do about the situation. God knows our hearts and their heart as well. It may look like He is doing nothing to us, but it just looks that way.
The question doesn’t take into account God’s mercy and grace. Have you ever noticed that you want mercy and grace for you and justice for those who hurt you and do wrong to you? I’m thankful for God’s mercy and His timing.
The question doesn’t take into account that what may be difficult may be God’s biggest blessing to us. Think about Romans 8 that talks about all kinds of difficulty. Paul sums up the issue by saying:

“All things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to His purpose. For whom he did foreknow, He did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son.”

It also reminds me of the lyrics in this song:

What if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know your near?
What if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise?

Application

My responsibility is mine own heart. God will take care of executing grace, mercy and judgment. I would be terrible at doing that. He is perfect at doing that.

Heavenly Father, Please help me to take responsibility for my own life, to be thankful for everything that happens to me good and bad, and to help me pray for those of us who struggle with evil. I love you Lord. Amen.
