Week 10: Day 1- Deuteronomy 6:1-3

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Deuteronomy 6:1-3

Explanation

This particular section comes after Moses’ reminds the people the 10 commandments that God wrote on the tablets of stone. He tells them that God commanded him to teach them to the people so that they would be obedient in the land. If they listened to the commands and obeyed them, several things would happen.

  1. Their fear of God would increase.
  2. Their lives would be prolonged.
  3. They would “increase mightily.”
  4. Their children would learn the same and have the same results.

Application

Although good things can happen to bad people, and bad things can happen to good people, the truth is that in a real way God blesses obedience. God is just, and He can be counted on to do justly.

If we listen and obey we will be blessed, and if we do not listen, or listen and do not obey, we must not expect the blessing of God on our lives.

Response

  1. Is there an area of your life where you are being disobedient?
  2. How does knowing that God wants to bless obedience help to motivate you to do right?
