Entertaining Angels…Don’t get jaded! Hebrews 13:2

2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Hebrews 13:2

Explanation

The word for “entertain” is the word “philoxenia”. The same word is used in Romans 12:13 for “hospitality”. Hospitality was especially important in the first century for everyone, and especially for Christians. Travel wasn’t as easy as it is today in our country. We have highways, hotels, exits, and chain restaurants of every flavor. In the first century, these things largely did not exist or weren’t available as they are today. When Christians were persecuted they were dispersed, and as a result their very survival could be dependent on the kindness of strangers to make food, water and shelter available to them without much notice or planning.

The preacher also gives a reason for hospitality beyond those that I have mentioned here. He says that some who have given hospitality to strangers have “entertained angels unawares.” I don’t believe that he was giving the exclusive reason why we should be hospitable to strangers. Though people have entertained angels without even knowing it, like Abraham and Sarah, Lot, and Gideon, I believe the ultimate motivation is that God could use us in amazing ways when we are open to helping people in need.

Application

Swindlers and shisters have made some jaded when it comes to opportunities to help people in need. While we need to be discerning about just handing people money, beilevers need to be quick and ready to give when allows us to see needs that people have. Recently, I had someone that I was trying to help, and someone in my life heard what was happening. He pulled out his wallet, handed me $50 out of it. He said, “Pastor, I hope this helps. I keep money in my wallet just so when God directs me to be a help in the moment I can.” I believe this speaks to the heart of this verse. Be ready to help those in need when God brings the opportunity to your attention. Why? We may not know until heaven exactly how God used us to bless and help others.

Response

Heavenly Father, I have been one of those people who at times has been jaded towards people because of those who take advantage. Help me to be discerning, but generous. Direct me to help someone today!
