“All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made”
-John 1:3
Explain
Another truth we learn about Christ here is that he created everything. All things were made by the Word, Jesus Christ. The word “pas” (panta) leaves no room for exception. The words for “not anything” could be translated “not one thing”.
Because the Word is creator, by definition He is not created.
This is another way we see a connection between John 1 and Genesis 1.
Genesis 1:1-3
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
In the beginning was the word…all things were made by Him.
How did God createn in Genesis 1. God spoke to create.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
If you read Genesis 1, you’ll find that the word translated “said” is used 11 times in the creation account.
The New Testament is replete with this same truth about Christ. The world was made by God through Christ.
Romans 11:36
36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
Colossians 1:14-17
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Adrian Rogers comments that
“by Jesus were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him and He is before all things (Col 1:16) and then He says this, and by Him all things consist (Col 1:17). That is, all things hang together, that without Jesus, everything would come apart. Jesus is the glue of the galaxies, all things were made by Him, all things were made for Him, all things are coming to Him and through Him it all holds together. You see, dear friends, if you take Christ out of your life, your life will fly apart. If you take Christ out of your home, your home will come apart. All things are made by Him, and it is only through Him that things hang together.
Hebrews 1:1-2
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
1 Corinthians 8:5-6
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
2 Peter 3:5
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
As has already been stated, we know that more than just God the Father was
Genesis 1:26
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Application
If Christ created everything, then Christ can help me.
…then Christ is wise. He can help me.
…then Christ is strong. He can help me.
…then Christ is personal. He knows me. He can help me.
…then Christ is eternal. He has known me and will know me. He can help me.
…then Christ is worthy of my worship, because He made me.
Response
Thank you Lord for creating me. Thank you Lord for redeeming me. I do not deserve it. Amen.
