Accountable to God: Day 58

Today’s Text: Matthew 28:18-20, 2 Timothy 2:1-4
Today’s Key Thought: This great command by Jesus isn’t just about salvation and baptism.  It’s about obedience!

Jesus continues to describe what making disciples looks like to the disciples when he said, “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.”  Aren’t you glad that Jesus had exemplified or “fleshed out” what it meant to do just that?  He had given the commands and the teaching, and then He had taught them how to do what He had commanded.
If we are going to be good stewards of the gospel we have to be dedicated to teaching people how to follow Christ and to be dedicated to following Christ ourselves.

Paul communicated this idea to Timothy when He said in 2 Timothy 2:1-2, “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

Application:

Are you following Jesus as a disciple?  Are you being discipled by someone in your life?  Who are you “teaching to observe” what Jesus had commanded?

Today’s Text: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Today’s Key Thought: God has given us His Word to change the way we think and act.

Today’s verses are so foundational for understanding this Truth.

“All Scripture”-  The totality of scripture from Genesis to Revelation.  This is applicable to the 66 books of the Bible.

“is given by inspiration of God”- Literally- “is God breathed.”  The very words of scripture find their source in God Himself.

“and are profitable”- this was their intended purpose

“for doctrine”- what to believe

“for reproof”- for correcting what we believe that is wrong

“for correction”- for changing what I do that is wrong

“for instruction in righteousness”- for helping us to do right.

Why?

“That the man of God may be perfect”-  This would apply to men and women who belong to God.  His word teaches us what to believe and do so that we may be spiritually mature and complete.

“thoroughly furnished unto all good works”- The Bible was intended to completely equip us to do what God wants us to do.
Application:

Is God’s stated purpose for scripture doing what God intended it to do in your life?  Are you being submissive to God’s Word to the degree that it is changing what you believe and how you behave?

Voices: the Bible

Devotion for Tuesday, December 6

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

The ultimate voice that we need in our life is the voice of God. What is so cool is that He has spoken to us clearly in black and white. Today’s text tells us that all scripture is God breathed and is profitable for 4 thing:

Doctrine: What we are to believe.
Reproof: What not to believe.
Correction: What not to do.
Instruction in righteous: What to do.

What you believe directs what you do. God’s voice needs to be spoken into your life through His Word to help you know what to believe, what not to believe, what to do and what not to do.

Application:
Does God’s voice influence what you believe and what you do? Not in theory- in real life…today?
