7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
Psalms 19:7-9
Explanation:
The psalmist has already said that the Creator is communicating to us through His creation. The question then rightly becomes, how do I communicate back? How do I know what this Creator wants? What does this person want from me?
The good news is this- the Creator has communicated to us beyond creation. He hasn’t just communicated to us through the stars. He has communicated to us via special, supernatural revelation. That’s where the psalmist goes next.
In this psalm, you see multiple terms that refer to God’s special revelation.
- Testimony
- Statutes
- Commandment
- Fear
- Judgements
God’s special revelation has been progressive. This means that when David wrote it, these were apt descriptions of the special revelation of God that they had.
One may argue that the word “fear” doesn’t refer to God’s special revelation. It is definitely less directly a term for scripture. Yet we know that the Proverbs tell us that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom”. God is the source of all wisdom, and properly understanding God and learning from Him through Special revelation does start with fearing Him.
The first reason why you need to read God’s Word daily has to do with the quality of this special revelation.
God’s special revelation is…
- Perfect- Complete. It has a completing effect. It is entire.
- Sure- It is verified. It is able to believed in. It is able to be trusted. It something we can rely on.
- Right- The word here is most literally understood as “straight”. It’s not crooked. It’s not wrong. It’s upright.
- Pure- without blemish.
- Clean
- True
- Righteous
These are words that cannot aptly describe the words of man. Outside of scripture, could this be said in totality of any other book, or collection of ideas? Could you say this about cable news? Could you say this about the writings of mere men? Politicians? Sages? Philosophers? Could you say that about some institution? No! There is no place we could go outside of the scripture for this kind quality of Truth. Is there any church that could say that everything it has ever taught or done has been completely without fault or blemish?
We believe in biblical authority because we believe that is where the authority is. It is where the authority is because of whose word it is. Notice what is said over and over again- “The law…of the Lord”, …”of the Lord”, “…of the Lord”
Application:
We hold a miracle in our hands when we hold the Bible! You have the thoughts of God given to you to inform your day, guide your life, and change your heart. We need to read it every day!
Response:
God thank you for your Word. It is true, perfect, right, clean and righteous. Help me to love it and live it out. Amen
Can’t like this enough! So many reasons to trust and obey His Word!
Amen 🙏🏻. His Word should be more desirable than even food and water each day. – Justin
