Devo: Sunday Summary for September 11th

Two things are striking me today about our upcoming services.  Here are my thoughts…

Peace

If there is anything lacking in many of our hearts and minds these days it is peace.  It is easy to be worried all the time.  It’s very easy to be frustrated, in turmoil, sad, lonely, and discouraged.  <—Didn’t that last sentence just get you down a little bit?  Me too.

Here is the good news.  Jesus has given us peace!  Peace with God! It isn’t an artificial, doesn’t-really-work kind of peace. Listen to what he said in John 14:27.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

-Jesus Christ

The peace that God gives doesn’t mean He has promised incredible, beautiful, easy circumstances. He hasn’t.  He has just promised to guard our hearts and minds in the middle of those circumstances.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

September 11th

One of those difficult circumstances that our country went through shows a lack of peace in the world.  Today we remember what happened 10 years ago when Islamic terrorists attacked our country, when brave policeman, firefighters, and other first responders so bravely gave of themselves, and when our country was united (if but for a short time) around things like patriotism, the importance of prayer, and the need for God to give us peace.

As you take time to remember today, thank God that we can have peace in very difficult circumstances.

James- Day 8

Devotion for Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.  Do not err, my beloved brethren.

James 1:15-16

In today’s verse we see a destructive process.  What is the process?  Unhindered desires lead to sin.  Sin always brings death.  There has never been a sinful act that has lead to life.  Sin ultimately brings destruction.  When we are tempted, and give in to that temptation, the ultimate end is pain, hurt, and destruction.
Think about all the pain that has come from sin or the effects of sin that has happened through human history.  The musician, Andrew Peterson, spoke of it in his hopeful song “After the Last Tear Falls”:
“Cause after the last plan fails
After the last siren wails
After the last young husband sails off to join the war
After the last “this marriage is over”
After the last young girl’s innocence is stolen
After the last years of silence that won’t let a heart open
there is love…”

Application:  Today, when you are tempted, don’t just think about the potential benefit to giving into the temptation.  Think about the potential harm and destruction that will happen as the result.
Also, take encouragement in this- Death will die one day, because of the resurrection of Jesus.  “O Death, where is thy sting.  O grave, where is thy victory!”

James- Day 1

james seriesgraphicDevotion for Monday, August 29th, 2011

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing

James tells his reader to count it as joy when we fall into “divers temptations” (various trials).  That sounds crazy right.  Be joyful about the fact that I’m going through difficult circumstances?  That seems a little weird.  But James gives a good reason for this statement.  He says that when you go through trials, it exercises your faith and the result is patience.  When we go through difficult circumstances, it can help us learn how to endure and trust in God to get us through it.  The more we do that, the more able we are to handle what we go through.  Patience works in us so that we can be “perfect and entire, wanting nothing”.  This is another way of saying that we’ll be complete!  Our character will grow to be what God wants us to be.

I think this song explains this principle pretty well…

Application:
Sometimes we think of difficult circumstances as whole seasons of life, and they certain can be that.  But we go through things that we may not like on a regular basis.  Today, when you get frustrated, aggravated, hurt, or offended remember to “count it joy” and think about how your circumstance can help you trust God more.

Authentic Faith- Day 12

authentic faith Devotions for Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Hebrews 11:3

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Pastor Ben’s Commentary:
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

No one saw the origin of life- the beginning of our planet.  We know what happened because God revealed what happened to Moses who wrote it down in the first chapter of Genesis.  According to this verse, creation came by the word of God.  This is of course correlates with  Genesis 1.  In fact, go back and read the first chapter of the entire Bible.  Over and over the Bible states, “And God said, …” and then creation came from the Word that he spoke.

Application:
1. We serve an enormous God, who intelligently designed an incredible universe. This place isn’t about us, it’s about Him. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament (land)showeth His handiwork.” “The things that are seen (this physical earth) were not made of things which do appear” (natural processes, or people) but by the invisible, all powerful-Creator God.

2. Even though we are small in stature, God loves us and wants us to know Him. The incredible Designer-God who formed this planet, galaxy and universe loved you and I enough to send His Son to pay for our sins.

2. God’s Word is incredible. The Word of God created the world, and is available to us today. It is infintely valuable, and we should treat it that way.

Take a few minutes today to think about our Creator God, and to thank Him for what He has made.
