Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. (Psalm 1:1-6)
Today’s devotion will be just a little bit different. I’m going to help you guys walk through the text by asking questions that you can answer in the comments. I think it’ll help you get to a pretty cool application and let you learn some things…
- What is the significance of the words “walk”, “stand”, and “sit” is in verse 1?
- What does it mean to delight in the law of the Lord? meditate?
- Compare a tree by a river to chaff in the wind. You might need to google search chaff to figure this one out.
- Why is the one who delights in God’s law like a tree, and the ungodly like chaff?
- What is the end of the ungodly? of the righteous?
- What is YOUR takeaway for TODAY? 🙂
1. The significance is the walk: not in the counsel of the ungodly. Stand: don’t stand in the way of sinners. Sit: dont sit in the seat of the scornful.
2. The delight means pleassure so it means that he finds pleassure obeying gods commands and that he meditates day and night.
3. Well a tree by a river stands strong and the river flows in to it and the chaff or
The husks of corn or other seed separated by winnowing or threshing so the wind is driving them away by wind??
4. Because the one that delights god in his laws like a tree is strong he he’s stand strong and tall and that means that he his following your laws and that he succeeds in anything he attempts, and a chaff is that it wiggles alot so it’s not sturdy and strong and a simple wind can drive it away because it is not following you laws.
5. The way of the ungodly ends is destruction and the way of the righteous ends is congregation.
6. My take away is that I don’t think I got all the answers right and that god wants us to be godly like the tree and the river but not ungodly like the chaff and the wind.
1) walk:to take the right path not the wrong.stand:i really didn’t get this one! 😦 sit:don’t let a temptation let u be scornful or bad.
2) delight:to find pleasure w/ God which is like obeying him.meditate: like to meditate on his word is to…. u kno,i don’t get this one either!
3) this may not be right but,i think it means that wwe should plant good seeds and grow faithfully like a tree does when it is planted w/ the right seeds?!
4) i agree w/ mafalda cause the one who delights in God will stand strong just like a tree will. the one who doesn’t delight in God will be weak and basically fall over and they will have to pick themselves up again and start again.
5) ungodly: really bad destruction.righteous:congregation?
6) my take away is that i kinda had a hard time w/ this and that i kno God will help me w/ that!!!! 🙂
u guys r all so great!! im soo thankful 4 all of u!! BTW,i had fun last night mel and lindsey!!! 🙂 love u all!!! and see u guys tmrw!!! 🙂 ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
I had fun too allie, good comment! 🙂 you too mafalda! Proud of you girls for being so consistent with your devos! I know it can be hard but i like how you guys try! I got confused too so its okay! Thats what h2ostuff.com is for, to help eachother grow 🙂
1) to walk means to not walk, or follow, the ungodly people, but to walk with the godly people. To stand means to not be in the way of sinners, but to be away from them. To sit means to not “sit” with the sinful, but to be different and sit with godly people!
2) I think “to delight in the law of the Lord” means to be happy by following Gods commandments. To mediate means to understand & practice keeping God’s laws.
3) a tree to a river means the tree is supported by the river, which gives it fruits & unwithered leaves. The river keeps the tree alive. The chaff (or seeds from flowers/trees) to the wind is saying that the chaff just blows around, and away.
4) The one who delights in God is like a tree to a river because we who delight, and follow God are benefited, and good things come out of it! God is our river, he keeps us trees alive and prosper 🙂 the ungodly are like the chaff in the wind because they go farther and farther away in the air, and have nothing to help them.
5) the ungodly perish, and the righteous have a home in Heaven with our God!!!
6) my takeaway from today is that as followers of God, we are blessed! I know i have to stay away from the temptations & sins. I also learned that God is our river, and keeps us (the trees) alive & helps us “grow” 🙂 the seeds in the wind represent the lost people, which is scary because they can move farther & farther away from God if we dont do anything to prevent it!
I hope i got the right thing out of these verses 🙂
1. I think it means to go against the flow and to stand for what is right and not go with everyone else.
2. To be with God and trust Him and do what He would have for your life and not what you want.
3. And 4. A tree by the river is never thirsty and has a good foundation and is not easily moves. Chaff I think is the by product of wheat and they uses to throw up the wheat into the air and the wheat the stuff they wanted would fall to the ground and the chaff would blow away in the wind. So if your like the chaff you are easily moved, you don’t have warring foundation.
5. Separation from God for eternity for the ungodly but for the godly eternal life and a place for them in heaven.
6. The biggest thing I got was that what you associate yourself with the kind of media you let influence you shapes who you are.
1. The significance of these verses is to say that a man will be blessed for not walking like the ungodly, or standing in the way of sinners, or sitting in the seat of the scornful, to represent how we should act, as Christ followers.
2. We should be meditating on God’s commands everyday. We should be taking in the word we read and not just letting it sit there like an unused napkin. If we’re messy, we need a napkin, we don’t just need to half clean our mess with our shirts, we need the trick to do the job right and that’s a napkin. Same thing with God’s word. We need it, so why let it sit there on the table when we clearly need it to improve our messy lives? Pick up the napkin, and use it!
3. A tree by a river has everything it needs. Sunlight, water, nutrients, but a chaff in the wind is a mess. The wind carries it everywhere and it never stays put. It get’s spread apart and doesn’t stay in one peice, but the tree by the river is one solid unit, together all held by it’s resources.
4. One who delights in God’s law is like the tree by the river, because they are using the essential resources we need! Reading God’s word, having a loving, growing relationship with Him, delighting on His law! But the ungodly are like chaffs in the wind because they don’t have a good foundation in life. Without God as a foundation, you’ll be spread all around in different peices, not living the life God intended.
5. The ungodly will not make it to judgment day. They will end with the world, not with the righteous and holy! They won’t stand before others who have followed Christ, but with those who denied Him.
6. My takeaway for today, is to be more like a tree by the river, and not just any tree, but a plentiful tree. I want to be the best I can be for God! Strive for perfection and righteousness, because that’s who Jesus was, perfect and righteous! Live a life honoring my savior, and the life He planned for me! 🙂 I want to help those who are chaffs in the wind, and lead them to Christ to being trees by the river!
Psalms is an amazing book! I love it ❤
