Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. James 3:13
“Who is the wise a wise man and endued with knowledge among you?” Notice James doesn’t ask “who is the pastor”, “leader”, “father” or “mother”, but rather “Who is the wise…?”. He is not asking about a position, but rather about a reputation that is reflected because of a reality. He then gives that person a command for that person to display their works with meekness of wisdom. What does this mean?
- It is right for people to see my works. It’s is right for my works to develop a reputation. In fact, I should display my works to provide an example.
-
My works should flow from the character qualities of meekness and wisdom.
-
Wisdom comes from God. Remember James 1:5. If we ask God in faith for wisdom, He will give it to us.
-
Remembering the true source of wisdom should keep me meek. I am meek when I am both confident and humble. It comes from an inner faith in God, and a reliance on Him for the abilities to do what He has called me to do.
Application:
All of us are applying some kind of knowledge to the way that we act. What we really believe shows up in how we live. The overall question this week that we will ask is this: Whose wisdom are you living by?
What i learned from this passage is that if we are wise we could be leaders and and followers of God. We need to be and do the right thing because we dont want to be the foolish man who maes bad choices and isnt following. Right now in the world we live in nees God so badly be cause without him nothing is possible.
…And He’s back. Oh yeah!
Great comment Andrew. Proud of you.
I totally agree with andrew if we are wise we could be leaders and followers of god and we dont want to be the foolish man at all!! :). There’s different wisdoms that we could be livIng by like for example you moms wisdom and your teachers wisdom and your best friends and ect… but I live by gods wisdom and my moms wisdom because they are very improtant to me and they thought me alot in life and they know wrong from right.
it kinda bounces back and forth between my parents and God.for me.following my mom and dad’s wisdom i think is good cause they r christians and they know alot about God.at the same time i think following God is better cause like andrew said nothing is possible w/ out him and we need him everyday.it could be hard 2 listen 2 ur mom and dad’s wisdom cause they could accidentaly give u the wrong info and could lead 2 more things.thats what i got out of today’s devo! 🙂 (love doing it everyday!!! ) love u guys!!! 🙂 <333
Totally true!!!! ^^ I agree with u guys! 🙂 those r some good points! If we r wise we could become leaders of god! 🙂 but we r already followers of god! So thts amazing! If we become leaders of god then we can’t not be foolish mans!!!! 🙂 u guys did really good! Great job Mafalda Allie and andrew!!! 🙂 love u guys!!! C u guys Wednesday!!!! 🙂
thanks tristi!!!! 🙂 love u too!!! <333
DYNAMITE !!!
Everyone wants wisdom, right?! But like James is saying, only true wisdom comes from God! I guess I’ve known that, but truthfully, I have not been applying it! Just recently I was upset over something I did not want to happen, and I was scared. But someone reminded me that God has a plan for everything, and we go through tough times to learn from them and grow. Instead of worrying about what’s going to happen, I need to be trusting that God will give me the wisdom and strength to get through it! Sometimes I forget that, and after something has happened I’ll think “Why didn’t I trust God? It would have been soo much easier!” probably the reason why would be because I think I can do things on my own, and that I have enough wisdom to do it myself. But I don’t, not even close! God has more wisdom than I could ever imagine, but sometimes I choose not to listen to Him. I don’t even know why either, cause when I do trust Him, everything turns out great! I guess it’s just a matter of admitting that I can’t do things on my own. I need God, a lot! And I definitely need to live by HIS wisdom! 🙂
I think today’s devotion was something I really needed to hear, & I can’t wait to start applying this stuff!!!
sorry if this is a weird question but who’s “gram”?
I think it’s Grant! lol Guess he’s a Grahm cracker now! 😛
ohhhhh…… ok! 🙂
I knew that was grant!!!!
I listened to my own wisdom for a really long time, and it never seemed to get me very far.. I thought I was listening to God, but most of the time, I wasn’t at all! Wisdom comes from God. Everyone makes mistakes, but He doesn’t. Like Pastor Ben mentioned, if we pray for wisdom, He’ll grant it to us. (He’s not a genie, but if we pray for it, He’ll give it to us!) If we know that all we need to do is to pray for wisdom, why don’t we? Why do we continue to take our own wisdom and not God’s? Why do we think we’re right and end up on the wrong roads, when God’s the one who is right and leads us to the right roads? We deal with things on our own and find out the hard way later that, we can’t help ourselves, but God can help us! I want to live by God’s wisdom everyday! I want Him to make me wiser! 🙂 great stuff! Let’s not learn the hard way that we can’t do it alone, let’s apply this to our lives and live knowing God is where the source of wisdom comes from and we can have it everyday if we just pray! 🙂
I think my wisdom comes from the holy spirit inside me! I pray every morning for wisdom & patience throughout my day & it really shows up! I know im not always careful with what i say or do, and that bothers me! Like P Ben said, we need to be meek, which is confidence and humbleness. Do i honestly display, or even think, either of those? Not really..so am i really wise? Well, thats what God working on in my life 🙂 i make so many mistakes, but by taking them to God, and asking for help in the situation, it helps me become a wiser girl everyday! You guys are right on with your comments. I want to show by my actions that iim a wise person, who has great knowledge about God! And just to be able to live life making the right, godly choices! Im not sure if that made sense i had a lot on my mind to say and i dont think it came out right! But im praying for you guys & good job today! 🙂
I really think this is great. I definitely need wisdom. Especially now that I’m at a public school.. I need to be a good example for others. I want to be a good example for everyone who is watching. Of course, my own wisdom is not good enough and I’ll make wrong choices so i need to ask for God’s wisdom. This devotion reminded me that all I need to do is ask. A lot of times I find myself trying to do it alone and then looking back and thinking “Wow, I was so stupid. Why didn’t I just ask?” God is always there for you. Just ask! He’ll help you even if you feel like He’s not. Maybe His plan for you is just a little different than your own 😉 BTW today i saw the movie “courageous” and it was absolutely AMAZING. Bless the people that made it. I definitely encourage all men to go and see it! It’s so inspirational 🙂 and it really sets the standards of what a godly household should look like
What I got out of this, Am I relying on faith and trust and wisdom in myself or God? So many times I either just din think about of choose not to include God in my choices or my everday life. I am going to let myself down, people are going to let me down and just putting my faith and trust in stuff will let me down. So I need to work on including and putting more faith in God and stepping out of my comfort zone.
