Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man , and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man , and he will increase in learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it . (Proverbs 9:8-12)
A definition that will help you:

1. A scorner would simply hate for someone to reprove them because a scorner doesn’t like to be told what to do in a sense. They don’t like to take others wisdom or advice into consideration and for someone to reprove them, or to teach them through correction, they wouldn’t stand for it because they would hate it.
2. A wise man would love to be rebuked because it then says, “Give instruction to a wise man and he will become wiser.” Well rebuking a wise man would be giving them strong dissproval, which would make them evaluate themselves therefore making them wiser.
3. It says to give instruction to a wise man and he will become wiser, teach a just man and he will increase in learning. A wise man receives instruction by someone giving it to him. Just as God gives us instruction, without it we’d be lost.
4. Fearing the Lord is so important! I think a lot of the time people misunderstand that God is almighty, and He is our father. He created us and can make anything happen. We need to fear Him because it’s essentially respecting Him. We are not equal with God, He is above us and therefore we need to fear Him. It’s the beginning of knowledge because understanding the importance of God and just who He is, is where it begins.
5. Wisdom multiplies the years of our life if we’re seeking God’s wisdom and not our own. Using God’s wisdom in everyday life and including Him in our decision making is what is important and will get us on the track of living our God designed life.
6. I think it says that when it comes to scorning that we will beat it on our own because we aren’t seeking direction from anyone let alone God. We don’t want help, so we won’t get it. We’ll be all alone going throughout making mistakes because we failed to seek wisdom and instruction from God and godly influences around us.
Good comments Mel!
1. He doesnt like be told what to do or how to do it.
2. Because it is a chance for him to learn.
3. He is ready to listen and learn, it’s easier to do it right the first time than try again and again through failure.
4. If you fear God you trust and respect Him and he can show you things through His creation and through circumstances He lets you go through.
5. If you trust God and you live His way He will multiply your years on the earth because it’s His will being done and not ours.
6. I think because if you seek God and his wisdom He will be with you, but if you try and do it by yourself you will be doing it alone.
