And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (24) For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (25) But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Romans 8:23-25
Explanation:
Creation isn’t the only entity waiting for the return of Christ. We who are adpoted children are waiting for His return, waiting for the full realization of our adoption, that is glorification in a heavenly glorified body. He says we have the “firstfruits of the Spirit”. Those who know Christ have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. He produces the fruits of the Spirit in and through them. He convicts of sin. He convinces us that we are the children of God. We hope for something that we don’t see, that is the redemption of creation and the redemption of our body. We are free from the power of sin, but we long to be free from the presence of sin and its effects. We hope for it, and we wait for it.
Application:
Hoping and waiting can be very difficult, but one day that waiting willl end. Hope will become realized. Jesus said,
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:3
We can trust His promise. He will give us the grace, through His Spirit, to wait for it.
Response:
Since we have the Holy Spirit enabling and empowering us, our waiting is not intended to be a inactive, passive excercise. Rather, we are here on the planet to make a difference. We glorify God by being on His mission, making disciples who make disciples. Who can you invest in today while you wait?
